Since being nominated for my 'no makeup selfie' last night, I've seen various photos and articles both supporting and dismissing the campaign.
I completely understand the annoyance of the same photos popping up on your news feed throughout the day, and I'll put my hands up and say that I was the first to complain about the 'neck and nominate' phase (but let's face it, there was no moral value to it and it was ridiculous!)
However, there are a number of people commenting that girls are just 'posting photos of themselves' with any excuse for 'a selfie' and it upsets me to think that people can't be a little more open minded.
Of course, the point of the campaign isn't just to get your friends to see how nice you can look without your 'face', it's to raise money as well as awareness, and encourage you to text or donate online.
People are arguing that you should just donate without posting the pic, but that would completely defeat the point of the campaign. By posting your photo and 'nominating' your friends, you're drawing their (and many other social media users') attention to the campaign and raising awareness in your own way.
If you are good enough and in the position to donate alongside that then even better - you can post your selfie with pride, ignoring the negative comments and knowing that you've done your bit to support Cancer Research. I'm no millionaire, and always moaning I have no money, but even I donated my £3 by texting BEAT to 70099!
Already, the campaign has caused much controversy, sparking newspaper reports, blogs and comments on social networking sites both for and against the photo trend.
The Cancer Research twitter team earlier commented on the trend, highlighting the 'sentiment' behind the idea, and that's exactly it - it shows that we are all beautiful no matter what, with beautiful hearts that with a little bit of encouragement can do our bit to help find a cure for this ugly disease.
The Cancer research website is extremely helpful in guiding you through the donation process, giving options of small but appreciated amounts that can be donated by text, as well as the option to donate any amount of your choice, whether it be a one off donation or starting up a monthly direct debit.
So I encourage you to join in with this trend, ignore the negative miseries, and if you haven't already, donate as little or as much as you can here, or text BEAT to 70099 - every donation counts!
Articulate, well argued point of view. No one has nominated me!! Ha ha .
